THE DOLOROUS PASSION has been inspiring thousands since it first appeared in 1833 -- being based on the detailed visions of Our Lord's Passion and Death as seen by Venerable Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824), a German Augustinian nun, nd recorded by Clemens Brentano, a prominent literary figure of the day. A saintly person from her youth and a great mystic and victim soul, Sister Emmerich was privileded by God during almost a lifetime of ecstatic visions to see all the events of Our Lord's suffering and death, which visions we can now understand in hindsight were a great gift from God to the world. Her account of the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ, while faithful to the Bible, is heart-rending, edifying and surprising -- and filled with intimate detail.

Places of Pilgrimage and Prayer

Have you ever wished you could walk in the candlelight procession at Lourdes, or see the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to three children at Fatima? In Apparition Shrines, Dr. Robin Ruggles takes you to fourteen celebrated shrines. In these sacred places, Jesus or his Blessed Mother appeared to "God's little ones" giving important messages to us all. Ruggles sets the apparition stories in their historical context, and recounts the subsequent history of the visionaries. He describes the shrines as well as points of interest in the surrounding areas, providing helpful information for those planning a pilgrimage. For those enjoying it from their own homes, the rich selection of photographs leaves the reader with a sense of having visited each place.

History and Meaning of the Apparitions

In this work the author examines the ancient sources pertaining to the apparitions of Mary on the hill called Tepeyac (near Mexico City) from December 9-12, 1531, and also the historical testimony of the event from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the present day. The author concentrates frist of all on the historical dimension, in order later to manifest the theological and anthropological content of the message of Guadalupe, where Mary and the prophetic figure of Juan Diego are placed in relief. After resolving the critical problem, the apparitions are studied from a theological point of view. The fundamental value of these apparitions becomes evident when we scrutinize the popular religiosity of the Mexican people, where symbol and myth, faith and culture, are intermingled, enabling us to discover the beauty and reality of Aztec theology manifested in the language of Mary, in the flowers miraculously blooming on the hillside and in the beatuful song of the birds.

On October 27, 1985, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, newspaper publisher and columnist, Wayne Weible, first learned of the phenomenon occurring in the little town with the unpronounceable name. Sensing that there might be material for his column, he decided ot pursue the story. Already he had a tie-in in mind that would be perfect for the season: "As we prepare to celebrate the miracle of christmas, a modern-day miracle may be taking place in an obscure village in Yugoslavia . ". The following evening, reviewing a videotape documentary of the events at Medjugorje, he realized that there was far more to it than one column. As it turned out, there were eight, and as requests poured in for reprints, to cut down on copying and postage costs he reproduced them in tabloid form. Now Wayne Weible has written a book about Medjugorje - the first from a Protestant perspective. It may be the most penetrating from any perspective.
